Frequently Asked Questions

  •  Where do the Luau events take place?

Sat Grass: The Saturday events take place at Horner Park, located at the corner of California & Irving Park Road. More location info coming soon!

Sun Sand: The Friday & Sunday sand events take place at North Avenue Beach, located at 1600 N Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. The blue boathouse is a great landmark. The event will be just south of that on Rows B through K and the Special Event area.

  •  So food isn't included this year?! What is the deal with that? Can I bring a cooler with food?

Food has traditionally been included as part of The Luau Grass Tournament on Saturday. After careful consideration, we made the decision to eliminate the all-you-can-eat component of the event this year. We listened to feedback from countless players who preferred to bring their own food without feeling compelled to eat what they paid for. We passed that cost savings back to you in the form of a lower per person price for the tournament. Players are welcome to bring coolers with food, non-alcoholic drinks, etc. Additionally we are offering two fantastic food options on site. Taquero Fusion will have their truck on site serving up a great menu at a reasonable price. At Big Dig, the tacos and nachos were a huge hit! Munchies Burger & Brats food truck will also be on site grilling up all your favorite pinic foods. Both will have non-alcoholic drinks available for purchase. Grills and outside alcohol are not permitted on the golf course!

  •  Beer is included with all Saturday tournament & spectator registration. What are the details?

We are proud to have Bud Light as a sponsor for The Luau Grass Championships on Saturday 9/12! Each year we go through over 100 kegs! New for 2015, we will be offering two choices for beer - Bud Light and Shock Top. We will also be serving Bud Light Limeritas & Strawberritas for those non-beer drinkers out there! The event is all-you-can-drink from 10 AM until 5 PM (21 & over). Beer will be available for purchase after 5 PM. No outside alcohol is permitted per golf course rules.

  •  Where can I park for the Grass Championships on Saturday?

No one will be permitted to enter the golf course main entrance on the Irving Park side near the Waveland softball fields. Security will be posted at this entrance all day and participants will be turned away. All players and spectators should exit Lake Shore Drive at Montrose & head east (approx 4400 N Lake Shore Drive). The golf course will be immediately on your right. FREE parking is available on Montrose Avenue with overflow parking available in a metered lot about 3 blocks east on Montrose for $1.50/hour. Your GPS will direct you to the main entry to the course so please ignore your GPS and exit Lake Shore Drive east on Montrose Avenue. The course will be immediately on your right. Look for our Luau entry signs for check in & have your ID ready! Click here for a map of the golf course!

  • Where can I park for the Beach events on Sunday?

Parking is very dependent on what time you get to the beach. If you arrive early, you can park in the pay lot closest to Castaways right at North Ave & Lake Shore Dr. This lot fills up extremely quickly. There is also a pay lot on Cannon just north of North Avenue. The Lincoln Park Zoo lot is accessible off Fullerton & has parking that usually doesn't fill up until after 12 PM. If you want to try to find free street parking, look on Cannon, Stockton and Lincoln Park West between Fullerton & Diversey & plan for a hike.

  •  What should I bring? Is there anything I can't bring to the events?

Players are encouarged to bring sunscreen, snacks, volleyballs & other volleyball-related gear. Canopies & tents are allowed (except in designated "no canopy" zones), but please be sure to stake/secure your tent into the ground. You can bring coolers with food & drinks, but no outside alcohol is permitted. Water is complementary & will be available on site. Dogs, weapons, outside alcohol, illegal drugs, grumpy people, grills & any set-ups larger than 10x10 are not allowed.

  • How does Check In work for the Saturday Grass tournament? Can I get check in on Friday to get it out of the way?

As you can imagine, getting 400+ teams checked in prior to the tournament starting on Saturday morning is a difficult task. It is essential that we have all teams checked in prior to your tournament start time so that we can ensure pool play starts on time and that the tournament runs smoothly. We only need captains to check in for their entire team. At check in, captains will receive a a golf course map and an entry ticket for each paid person on his/her team. Everyone must bring that entry ticket along with their ID to enter the course on Saturday. You can check in for the Saturday grass tournament in THREE PLACES: 1) ON FRIDAY at the Friday Beach Tournament at North Avenue between 11 AM & 12 PM. 2) ON FRIDAY at the MONTROSE ENTRANCE to the Golf Course between 5 PM & 7 PM. 3) ON SATURDAY at the MONTROSE ENTRANCE to the Golf Course between 6:30 AM & your Tournament Start Time - 8 AM for 3's, 9 AM for 4's/6's, 12 PM for Cornhole.

  • How does my tournament work? What time do I start? What should I expect?

All tournaments will use a pool play format with the top teams advancing to the Championship Bracket. For the grass events only, the bottom teams advance to the Bud Light Beer Bracket. For sand events, there is no Beer Bracket. Times are as follows:

Friday Volleyball - 12 PM start time. Pool play ends around 4:30 PM. Playoffs end by 8 PM.

Saturday Volleyball Triples - 8 AM start time. Pool play ends around 1:30 PM. Playoffs end by 6 PM.

Saturday Volleyball Quads/Sixes - 9 AM start time. Pool play ends around 1:30 PM. Playoffs end by 5 PM.

Saturday Cornhole - 12 PM start time. Pool play ends around 2 PM. Playoffs end by 3 PM.

Sunday Volleyball - 9 AM start time. Pool play ends around 1:30. Playoffs end by 4:30 PM

***Check in opens an hour before your tournament is scheduled to start. No walk up tournament registration will be permitted.

  • Can my friends & family come watch? How much does it cost?

Spectators over the age of 21 must purchase a ticket to enter for Saturday. Tickets cost $20 ahead of time online or can be purchased on site. Entry includes all-you-can-drink Bud Light as well access to our vendors and the party! Spectators under the age of 21 will are able to enter at no cost, but they will be given a different wristband. All spectators should enter the course from MONTROSE just east of Lake Shore Drive. There is no cost for spectators on Friday or Sunday at the beach.

  • Will there be a photographer on site taking pictures?

Yes we have several photographers to take pictures of all tournament teams and at the party. We'll post a huge album on Facebook the week after the event, so you can tag yourself and your friends!

  •  Who is sponsoring the event?

We are extremely appreciative of the support that we receive from our sponsors - Bud Light, The University of Illinois, Sports Authority, VolleyWear, Reserve, Chiro-One and Core Power. All of them will be on site this weekend with some cool giveaways and product sampling. Be sure to check them out in between games!

  •  What else is going on at the Golf Course on Saturday???

This year's event will be headlined by DJ Chris Lynn who has recently begun making a mark on the Chicago club scene. He will have several special guest DJ's with him throughout the day, blasting great music from the top of the Bud Light Build-a-Bar. Core Power & Treasure Island will be hosting Luau VIP Island for contest winners, where a few lucky teams will get their entry fee covered by Core Power, receive Core Power uniforms and a swag bag, access to a private tent & misting area, private kegs & catered food and snacks! Click here for more info!

  •  Are there opportunities for me to help out with the event and still play in the tournament?

We are always looking for people to add to our Luau Staff, especially for net set up on Friday during the day. If you are looking to help before & after you play on Saturday, we might be able to put you to work doing that as well. Contact eric@playerssports.net for more information.

  •  Is there a Post Party?

Yes! The Official Luau After Party will be held at Lottie's Pub (1925 W Cortland). We have the downstairs room reserved for Luau Players and Guests! Get the party started with FREE BUD LIGHT from 9-10 PM by showing your event wristband. Party hours are 9 PM until Midnight!

  •  How can I share my Luau experience during and after the event?

Be sure to RSVP to the Luau Facebook event page to let your friends know you are going! Use the hashtags #luau and tag us @PlayersChicago when you post on Twitter & Instagram. Be sure to tag yourself & your friends in the event photos. Most importantly, tell your friends what a great time you had at the Luau this year & bring them back with you next year!
