Luau Weekend FAQ

Saturday, Sept 12 β€” The Main Event Sydney Marovitz Golf Course Β· grass volleyball, cornhole, kickball, DJs and the Party Pen.

When do schedules come out?

Schedules post to your tournament's League Page and inside the Players app. Captains and co-captains get an email the moment they go live.

Pools and schedules are posted around 6:00 PM the night before each event. Check again the morning of β€” court assignments can shift right up to game time as divisions finalize and teams drop or add.

Once you're on site, the master schedule is also posted at the check-in tent. If your division time changes, captains are emailed and notified in the app.

Saturday start times: Men's & Women's 3's at 8:00 AM Β· Coed 4's & 6's at 9:00 AM Β· Kickball at 10:00 AM Β· Cornhole at 11:00 AM.

Where do I park?

Friday & Saturday β€” Sydney Marovitz Golf Course, 3701 N Recreation Dr. Exit Lake Shore Drive at Montrose Avenue and head east. The golf course is immediately on your right. Paid parking runs along Montrose Ave east of Lake Shore Drive; when that fills, there's a second paid lot about three blocks further east on Montrose. It's a long walk south from Montrose to the entry point, so build in time β€” especially for the 8:00 AM starts.

⚠️ Do not follow your GPS to Irving Park

GPS routes almost everyone to the Irving Park entrance near the Waveland softball fields. No one will be permitted to enter there. Navigate to W Montrose Ave & N Simonds Dr instead.

Friday night β€” North Avenue Beach, 1604 N Lake Shore Dr. Courts are in The Pit, south of the beach house. The paid lot west of the beach house off LaSalle Dr fills early on a Friday evening; paid street parking is available on the surrounding blocks. Add an extra 15 minutes for sunset congestion.

Sunday β€” Montrose Beach & Grove 16, 200 W Montrose Harbor Dr. The large paid lot west of the beach fills first. Additional paid street parking runs along Marine Dr and Montrose Ave toward Cricket Hill and Simonds Dr.

Rideshare & bikes: use 3701 N Recreation Dr for Friday/Saturday drop-off and 200 W Montrose Harbor Dr on Sunday. Divvy stations serve both lakefront locations.

What's the format? What are the rules? How do playoffs work?

Every Luau event runs pool play, with top teams advancing to playoffs. You are guaranteed your full pool regardless of results.

RoundFormat
Pool play2 games to 21, cap at 23 β€” all events, all volleyball divisions
Round of 32, round of 16 & quarterfinals1 game to 21, no cap
Semis & finalsBest of 3 β€” 21 / 21 / 15, no cap
Consolation1 game to 21, no cap
Cornhole1 game to 21, 2v2
Kickball6 innings or 45 minutes, 10v10 coed

Court ratios: Coed 4's play 2 men / 2 women. Coed 6's play 3 men / 3 women. Reverse Coed 4's play 2 men / 2 women on a women's net β€” men may not attack from the front row or block. Coed divisions cap at 50% men on the court at a time.

Division eligibility: Shorty divisions are men under 6'1" and women under 5'7" β€” if your driver's license reads 6'1" or 5'7", you are not eligible. Masters divisions require all players to be 37+ on event day.

Subs: No in-set substitutions in 3's except for injury. 4's and 6's may substitute mid-set.

Footwear: No cleats or spikes. Gym shoes or barefoot only.

Rosters & waivers: captains must list every player on the online roster, and every player must sign the electronic waiver before stepping on the court. Do this before you arrive β€” it's the number one thing that holds teams up at check-in.

What can I bring?

βœ“ Bring

  • A valid photo ID β€” required for a 21+ wristband, no exceptions
  • Camp chairs, blankets, and a pop-up shade tent
  • Coolers are welcome β€” just no alcohol inside them
  • Cash or card for food and on-site purchases

βœ— Leave at home

  • Outside alcohol β€” all alcohol is served inside the Party Pen under our event license
  • Glass containers of any kind
  • Cleats or spikes
  • Anything you don't want to carry from Montrose Ave

Are spectators allowed?

Yes β€” on Saturday, spectators and anyone not on a roster need a Spectator Pass ($30, ages 21+). The pass covers entry to the event, open volleyball, and drinks all day. Food is a separate purchase on site.

Passes are available on site, but we strongly encourage you to pre-purchase β€” Saturday draws a crowd and pre-buying gets you through the entrance faster.

Friday and Sunday spectators are free. Both are open lakefront park sites, so come watch, but note there's no drink package attached to those days.

What's included with my registration?

Every Saturday registration includes:

  • The beer & seltzer package β€” wristband for all rostered players 21+, served 11:00 AM–5:00 PM
  • Access to the Players Party Pen
  • Live DJs all day β€” DJ Marquee, DJ Miracle and DJ Nurotic
  • Hula performance and a fire-spitting show
  • Giant Jenga, life-size beer pong, and open volleyball between matches
  • Sponsor tents, samples and giveaways
  • Pool play plus playoff advancement, run by Players tournament staff
  • Champion prizes β€” Players apparel and future tournament entries

Friday and Sunday registrations include the tournament itself: pool play, playoffs, staffed courts, weather notifications, champion apparel and future tournament entries, plus cash payouts in the top men's and women's divisions and DJ music on site Sunday. The drink package is Saturday only.

Under 21? You can still play if you're 19+, but no wristband and no drinks.

What can I buy on site?

  • Honey Butter Beach Bar is serving up Hawaiian plates β€” pork or vegetarian options available
  • Drinks, snacks, fruit and bagels throughout the day
  • Sunscreen and bug spray β€” if you forgot yours, we've got you
  • Plus more at the Players tent
  • Sponsor tents β€” Ascend, SPF Lincoln Park, Chiro One, Awake Chocolate, Yes Matcha, Slunks, Five63 and Players Sports Center, with samples and giveaways throughout the day

Bring a card β€” most vendors take cards, but a little cash never hurts.

Give back while you're here: we're playing for Rae Strong Foundation and Lights Out Volleyball. Donation links are on both sites and volunteers will be on site Saturday.

I’ve been playing in Players volleyball tournaments and leagues for the last 10 years and am always so impressed. They are beyond organized with their tournaments, are super responsive and attract great competition. 11/10 stars!!

KATHRYN O.

Great people and great vibes. If you're looking to get out and meet some people while having fun then Players Sports is for you. There are leagues and tournaments for a bunch of different sports. They run them for all skill levels and you get cool shirts if you win. Also a lot of free promos - they give out a lot of energy drinks and other stuff. Overall, very fun and very friendly environment.

I have been playing with Players Sports Volleyball leagues and tournaments for years now and love it! They always provide a competitive atmosphere while displaying sportsmanship throughout the entire time.
